State Schools Programme

Background
In 2006 Roger Thyer- Jones ( chief instructor of Seido Karate UK and 6th degree black belt) and Stuart Wilson ( branch instructor and 4th degree black belt) were granted permission by Bucks County Council to teach Karate in schools in the County.

Having been established in the UK for over twenty years with several clubs in the High Wycombe area, as well as in London, Dover and Cornwall, this was an ideal opportunity to develop the Seido programme within the school structure. Please also visit www.seido.org.uk for further background.

Courses and Aim
Since that time Roger and Stuart have presented 10 week courses to dozens of schools- first, middle and secondary- in the Amersham, High Wycombe, Marlow and Princes Risborough areas. As well as developing physical skills and fitness, in line with the Governments’ initiative to get young people more active, our courses re-inforce traditional principles such as courtesy, respect and self control. Participants also learn defence skills and in most cases we see an improvement in self confidence.We have received very positive feedback from pupils, staff and parents alike, and in many schools we have returned year on year.

Instructors
Working closely with the Schools Partnership Development Managers and SSCO’S within schools, many of the programmes we have run have been funded by the Big Lottery or similar funding streams. Roger and Stuart both have enhanced CRB disclosures, Instructor Indemnity Insurance, appropriate First Aid Training and Child Protection training through the Martial Arts Development Commission. Private Schools Programme

Background
Over the last couple of years we have worked with thousands of young people in a variety of private schools in the South East of England, delivering a range of self protection and martial arts based programmes. We have worked with schools such as The Beacon, Chesham Prep, Caldicott, Davenies, Godstowe, St. Pirans and Thorpe House respectively, delivering seminars and workshops as part of leadership courses, post exam periods and on going pupil welfare programmes. We have delivered our “Don’t be a Victim” lecture at establishments such as Harrow School and Eton College respectively.

Aim
The aim of our programme is to increase participants’ awareness of potential conflict thus making it easier to avoid confrontation, therefore improving self confidence and raising self esteem. We combine practical and theoretical sessions encouraging students to learn in a friendly and supportive environment. We have received very positive feedback from all the schools where we have worked- please see our testimonials. In every case we have been asked to return and run follow up courses.
